This project uses the concept of a medieval book of hours as the framework for a modern artist’s book of poetry. After much research regarding books of hours, I selected eight of my poems (to echo the structure of a cycle of prayers), and reconstructed the elements of an illustrated manuscript. The challenge was to retain the essence of the medieval page decoration (flat, colorful, copious), yet freshen and personalize it to fully complement the poetry. Each photo montage is constructed of elements I felt related to the poem, and is meant to resemble the flatness of the artwork found in medieval scripts. The book is hand bound, and was kept relatively small to echo the size of traditional books of hours.
